In the heart of Southwestern Uganda lies Kanungu District, a region known for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant community spirit. But beyond its natural beauty, Kanungu is also a place where women and girls face significant challenges, from limited access to education to economic inequalities. Stepping up to address these issues is a group of passionate women who form the Kanungu Galz Network (K16).
Founded in 2016, Kanungu Galz Network brings together 50 women from diverse professional and social backgrounds, all with a shared goal: to improve the lives of vulnerable women and girls in Kanungu District. Whether they were born here or are married into the community, these women are united by their commitment to making a difference in the district they call home.
At the heart of K16’s mission is a deep concern for the well-being of girls and women. The network focuses on four key areas: girl child education, sustainable agriculture, health, and skills capacity building. These areas are vital because they touch on the most pressing issues faced by women in Kanungu. From early childhood, girls in rural Uganda often face steep challenges in accessing education, leaving many of them vulnerable to early marriage, limited career prospects, and a cycle of poverty.
K16 is determined to change that narrative. The women of this network are challenging the root causes of gender-based inequalities, such as lack of education and economic opportunity, while also addressing violations of women’s rights. They know that if women in Kanungu are to thrive, they must be equipped with the skills, knowledge, and resources to break free from these barriers.
One of K16’s flagship projects is the Kanungu Skills Center, which is set to transform the lives of young girls, especially those who have never attended school or dropped out early. The center’s goal is simple yet profound: to improve the employability of these girls by providing them with practical, marketable skills through vocational training.
Imagine a young girl who never had the chance to sit in a classroom, suddenly learning how to bake, tailor clothing, or make soap. These are not just skills; they are pathways to self-reliance, regular income, and ultimately, a better future. The skills training offered by the center taps into the creativity and talents of these girls, empowering them to enter the modern job market or even start their own small businesses.
By focusing on vocational skills that are in demand within Kanungu and its neighboring districts, the Kanungu Skills Center is opening doors that were previously closed for so many. It is an investment in the district’s future, ensuring that women and girls can contribute meaningfully to their community and uplift themselves economically.
While the center will prioritize vulnerable girls, it will also offer periodic training programs for individuals who are able to pay for their courses. This model ensures that the center is self-sustaining, while also serving as a demonstration and learning hub for vocational skills. Whether it’s groups from Kanungu or neighboring districts, the center will be a place where people come to acquire knowledge in fields like bakery, tailoring, fashion design, and soap making.
Already, over 400 girls have received training in these areas through K16’s programs, and the network is set to train many more, thanks to the Grow Project, sponsored by the World Bank in collaboration with the Uganda Industrial Research Institute. This partnership promises to expand the reach of K16’s work, allowing even more girls and women to gain the skills they need to thrive.
K16’s vision is clear: to see “Transformed, Healthy, and Productive Communities” in Kanungu and beyond. The network believes that empowering women and girls is not just the right thing to do; it’s the smart thing to do. Global research has consistently shown that when women and girls are educated and economically empowered, entire communities benefit. Families are healthier, poverty rates decrease, and social cohesion improves.
Kanungu Galz Network is a shining example of what can happen when women come together with a common purpose. Their work is driven by compassion, but it’s also deeply strategic. By investing in the education, health, and economic well-being of girls and women, K16 is laying the foundation for lasting change in Kanungu.
The future looks bright for the women and girls of Kanungu, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Kanungu Galz Network. With continued support from well-wishers, partners, and the broader community, K16 is poised to make an even greater impact in the years to come.
As the network continues its work, it’s clear that the women of Kanungu are not just recipients of aid, they are the drivers of their own transformation. Through education, skills training, and empowerment, they are creating a brighter, more equitable future for themselves and their communities. Together, we can ensure that every girl and woman in Kanungu has the opportunity to realize her full potential.
