In the rural villages of southwestern Uganda, a remarkable story of strength and resilience is / has unfolded. Grandmothers, many of whom have lost their children to the HIV/AIDS epidemic are stepping up to care for their orphaned grandchildren. While the loss of parents to AIDS has placed a heavy burden on Uganda’s elderly, the Nyaka Grandmother Project has been a beacon of hope, providing these women with vital resources and opportunities to rebuild their lives and provide for their families.
Established by Dr. Jackson Kaguri as part of the Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project, the Nyaka Grandmother Project is dedicated to supporting the grandmothers who are raising a generation of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. These grandmothers, known locally as "mukaaka" have faced unimaginable loss, yet their courage and determination shine through. The project equips them with tools, resources, and skills to create a stable and sustainable life for themselves and their grandchildren.
The project provides access to:
Microfinance Programs: Grandmothers are given small loans and training to start or expand businesses. These income-generating activities allow them to earn a living, enabling them to feed, clothe, and educate their grandchildren.
Healthcare: Through the project, grandmothers and their families receive healthcare support, addressing common health issues and improving their quality of life.
Housing and Sanitation: With help from the Nyaka Grandmother Project, many grandmothers have been able to improve their homes, gaining access to better sanitation and cleaner, safer living environments.
Emotional and Social Support: Perhaps most importantly, the project fosters community. Grandmothers gather to share their stories, offer advice, and lean on each other for emotional support, creating a network of empowered women.
we recently had the privilege of recording a video with some of these incredible grandmothers. In the video, they share heartfelt testimonies of how the Nyaka Grandmother Project has transformed their lives. These women speak of the profound difference the project has made, from providing education for their grandchildren to improving their health and living conditions. Their stories are a testament to the power of community and compassion.
You can watch the inspiring video on the TJK Foundation YouTube channel to hear directly from some of the grandmothers who have benefited from this life-changing project. Their stories will not only move you but inspire you to take action.
